Uber plans to expand with 20000 robotaxis through Lucid and Nuro

    July 19, 2025 Automotive

Uber has announced plans to deploy 20,000 robotaxis over the next six years as part of its long-term strategy to expand its autonomous vehicle operations. The ride-hailing company confirmed the fleet will consist of electric SUVs manufactured by Lucid and fitted with self-driving technology developed by California-based start-up Nuro. The vehicles will be owned and operated either by Uber itself or through its third-party fleet partners, and will be accessible exclusively via the Uber app.

This latest development underscores Uber’s ambition to position itself as a leader in the evolving robotaxi sector. The company has been actively pursuing partnerships with key players in the autonomous vehicle and automotive industries to advance this objective. In addition to its collaboration with Lucid and Nuro, Uber has existing agreements with German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen and Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google.

Waymo’s self-driving vehicles are already operational in select US cities through the Uber platform, allowing users to hail autonomous rides as part of the company’s broader transportation services. VW’s robotaxis are also slated to join the platform in the near future, further expanding the range of autonomous options available to Uber’s customer base. Uber’s strategy reflects the broader industry trend towards integrating autonomous vehicles into urban transportation networks.

New partnerships with Lucid, Nuro reinforce Uber’s robotaxi ambitions

The deployment of these 20,000 vehicles is intended to solidify Uber’s position as a primary access point for consumers seeking autonomous ride services, while leveraging partnerships to minimize the capital burden typically associated with developing and operating such technology in-house. Earlier this week, Uber also revealed a new agreement with Chinese autonomous driving technology firm Momenta.

This partnership is aimed at exploring autonomous ride-hailing services beyond the US and China, signaling Uber’s intent to globalize its robotaxi operations as regulations and infrastructure allow. The collaboration with Momenta is expected to help Uber navigate the complex regulatory environments in different regions while offering access to technology suited to varied urban landscapes. Uber’s investments in autonomous technology are part of a broader industry race among technology firms and automakers to commercialize self-driving vehicles at scale.

While the path to full deployment remains subject to regulatory approvals and public acceptance, Uber’s multi-partner approach suggests it is preparing to adapt flexibly to different markets and timelines. With these plans in place, Uber aims to integrate a significant autonomous fleet into its platform, offering consumers more choice while advancing its long-term vision of reducing costs associated with human drivers and enhancing operational efficiency through technology-driven solutions. – By Content Syndication Services.
